Happy Easter, everyone! I wish I had a fun Easter excerpt to share from one of my books, but the closest I have is Christmas ones. But this is the HOPPY EASTER BLOG HOP, so I'll just hop right into the contest.
For my contest, I'm going to pose a question about an upcoming book I'm writing in my Rescue Me series and let you all help me out with suggestions. I hope even those who haven't read the series yet will join in. You never know what might spark the way to go with this. My question is for a character in my May 2012 release, Nobody's Perfect.
The winner of the contest will be drawn on/after April 9 at random from all who comment. (But if I choose your answer in the book, you just might get named in the Acknowledgements of an upcoming book. Don't worry--I'll ask for permission first to find out if and how you want to be listed.)
For those who want to quickly be brought up to speed on some of the characters in this series, the introduction, Masters at Arms, for FREE through April 16 at Smashwords using Coupon code DN98N.
Da Prize: Winner's choice e-book in the Rescue Me series--plus some Kallypso Masters and Rescue Me "swag" that I'll be giving away at the Romantic Times Convention and elsewhere this year, including a set of three Romance Trading cards, a bookmark, a pen with "Ahh, Kallypso...the stories you tell" on it, and an 8-inch hand fan with this awesome graphic on it. (Ah, Master Adam!) Contest open internationally!
Now to the contest question, which I need to answer for an upcoming blog hop--and I need the answer by Monday. (No pressure!) Be sure to leave an e-mail address so we can contact you about the prize (or the acknowledgement).
BACKGROUND: The hero in my next book is Damian Orlando, an Iraq War veteran amputee and the sensitive sadist at the Masters at Arms Club. He's a Mexican-American who grew up in Solana Beach, California (near San Diego). Damian was a sniper in the Marines. Family is more important to him than anything. Not sure what else will help you with the answer, but some of my readers may want to chime in with more background in their comments.
DA QUESTION: What is Damian's favorite movie--and why?
Be sure to check out the contests on the other Hoppy Easter Blog Hoppers. There's a variety of heat levels from sweet to erotic and they're labeled accordingly at http://thebloghopspot.com/event-page/.
To learn more about the series and the books in it, click on the "Books by Kallypso Masters" tab above! Thanks for stopping by my page for the blog hop!
The lion king, the cub was young, he ran away in fear,he lost family, the cub grew up, returned to his home, for family, he kicked major ass for, his home, his past, his mother, his father, his girl, he got all he ran away from and so much more, the fear is gone, replaced by courage........ He ran away because of who and what he was, and because he was afraid his family would be affected, by what happened with savi, he didn't know the truth behind the life of hell she lived, he returned for his niece and sister, to face his past, like it are not, and well, well, well, he sees the girl that never left his mind, along with a surprise!
ReplyDeleteI think ultimately it is "Saving Private Ryan" because it involves sacrifice, saving the last brother in a family, it's a war story, etc.

I would definitely say that Damian's favorite movie would have to be "The Fast and The Furious" (2001) because while the characters are not all blood relatives, they are family and they will protect one another to the death.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) is an undercover agent who begins to question his loyalties when his new friends become the prime suspects.
Damian is not related to any of the other owners of the club but they become his family through thick or thin.
@}-;--
I'm gonna stick to my original answer of any of the Fast and Furious series or Gone in 60 Seconds since he works on cars, rides a bike and has PTSD.
ReplyDeletetowannalovestoread@yahoo.com
Fast and Furious would be my guess...loves his bike so much that Master Adam drove it across country to bring it to him when Damian's flew to his sister's rescue.
ReplyDeleteAlthough not blood related, these guys are definitely 'family'.
Happy Easter to all.

I'm gonna go old school and say Bad Boys b/c there is a lot of action and the main characters stick together even tho they have their differences. There is also the police angle, as he was in the military, protecting others would be improtatnt to him. I think it would fit more if there were more ppl but I wanted to use a different movie that the previous ones. And lots of things explode so how can that be wrong?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the hop! Happy easter!
megy_pooh@yahoo.com
I'm going to say What Dreams May Come because he's a man who would do anything to protect his woman from anything, even if it means falling into insanity for her. He knows the value of sacrifice and loyalty, and he has a heart of honor, even after finding the path to healing like the MC of the movie.
ReplyDeleteGreat question, Kally. Thanks for the giveaway.

I'm going to say Die Hard because he loves a good action movie and who doesn't like to see things blew up.

I am thinking that with Damian's PTSD, he is going to need to have a light, fun movie for a favorite. Something to help him forget for at least a little while everything that he has seen/experienced. And considering how important family is to him, I would probably pick something that he could have watched with his niece & nephew, maybe something like Wild Hogs. Either that or his fave could be a romantic comedy, something he would not what anyone to know about like The Notebook.

I would say "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg. It's about a retired Marine snipper with incredible skills who is wrongfully accused of an assassination he did not commit. He goes about finding the group who framed him and delivers he own justice and find a girl along the way. It's a great movie BTW. Thanks for asking us.

I remember Damian from the first book before the loss of his foot and becoming a sadist and what stands out for me is his love for his family. In the first book he shows love and compassion, and still has it afterwards despite all the ugliest he sees later and him trying to get over his PTSD. I think a film that reminds him of family or of a sweet and innocent time would draw him and the only one I can think of right now is "While You Were Sleeping" with Sandra Bullock.
ReplyDeleteA film that deals with family, the film is sweet, innocent, funny, light-hearted. Sandra Bullock plays a sweet young woman who seems lost and aches to have a family to share experiences with and enjoy. In some ways the plot with the two main characters not giving into their true feelings for each other may be similar in a way to Damian and Savi.
Sandra Bullock has an innocence about her in the film.
This film would be his secret pleasure as he would not want Master Adam, Master Marc or even Master Luke to know he would be into what they would call a girly-film.
Thanks for this giveaway and allowing us to post this. :)

Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb and pick a sci-fi movie - Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith (but just about any of the Star War movies (Episodes 1 to 3) would work) the following reasons:
ReplyDelete1. Anakin Skywalker by the third episode had fought in the Clone Wars (therefore a veteran), lost his hand, and was a war hero. He was Knighted as a Jedi for his service in the Clone Wars.
2. Anakin is fiercely loyal to his family whether or not they are blood related.
3. Anakin chooses his Mother over the Jedi Order when he kills the Sandmen, Anakin chooses Padme over the Jedi Order (in Revenge of the Sith specifically) but in other movies too. [No different then the way Damian protects Savi.] Chooses Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon-Ginn and Padme and fights against the blockade on Naboo, chooses Luke over Darth Sidious, and describes Obi Wan has his father in Episode 3 if not 2 too.
4. Anakin spends most of the Revenge of the Sith inflicting pain on others. But, originally the Jedi didn’t want Anakin because he was too sensitive.
5. Throughout out all of the movies Anakin likes to work on machines and fix things. Anakin built C3PO.
6. All of these movies have lot of action scenes. Plus, who doesn’t like Star Wars.

I'm going to be a little different and say a mini-series "Band of Brothers" I know you said movie but my hubby has been in the army for almost 7 years and it his favorite. It is about real soldiers and would remind him that he isn't alone. He could relate to it in so many ways. I got Master of Arms of smashwords! Thank you for the giveaway and the free book. Have a Happy Easter.
ReplyDeleteI don't know his story, so this is just a guess on the 'why'.
ReplyDeleteI'd say Full Metal Jacket because although he's a casualty of war, being a Marine meant everything to him. The movie reminds him of his loyalty to the Marines, to his Marine "brothers", and of the war in which he bravely fought.
Happy Easter, and thank you for the giveaway!

I think Damon's favorite movie should be Act of Valor. I know it's about a team of Navy Seals and not the Marines, but it stands for the same principles: Valor, Honor, Brotherhood, Family, Loss, Victory, Real-life Heroism, and more. All things that Damon values or has gone through and would very much appreciate in a movie.
ReplyDeleteI think his favorite movie would be 'Dirty Harry'.

I'm going to throw a different type of movie in the mix, the Alien series. What guy doesn't like such action packed movies as these, and with such a great kick-ass heroine (I love Ripley!).

Okay, well seeing as he's all sensitive, and a war veteran I'm going to say his favourite movie is Toy Story, because it's cute, and he'd want to escape from all the seriousness of life when watching a movie. Plus there was spanish Buzz in the third one. Thanks for the giveaway!

Wow! What a great question!! I haven't read this one yet, so I am going to go out on a limb and suggest The Outsiders as his favorite movie. It is a classic movie that evokes mixed emotions. There is a desire to do right by oneself and family, even if the actions and outcome do not support it. This is just a great story.

Ok, so I figured I would pick a movie my DH likes. He is compassionate and loves his family. So I'm going to go with Serenity. It is like a western sci-fi movies based off the tv series Firefly.

Im going to go with a mini~series also "Message From Nam" by Danielle Steel. Why...uummm...well for starters the main characters share so many situations/emotions he has faced so far that can be shared through the eyes of Savannah: military, camaraderie, tragedy, loss, despair, love of "family", honor, staying strong in times of chaos, light hearted fun... I think he would find it inspireing and give him hope he'll get through all the detours that life throws at him knowing his dreams are within his grasp. Just like Sgt.Tony and Paxton.
ReplyDeleteThey have shared (separately) extreme losses that have/will ultimately bring them closer together. They have both found a way to work through their extreme greif by emerging themselves into the very pain and altering it to do something good.
Sgt.Tony is a strong willed, well grounded man that has a deliciously tender side for those he considers part of his "family" with Paxton never far from his mind. Paxton is a passionate professional woman who follows her aspirations and does'nt loose sight of what's important. That passion, I believe, is what keeps them linked. Just like Damian and Savannah.
I can actually visualize a few differant scenarios written with Savannah and Damian in mind leading upto and while watching from tragic to romantic to possibly even with a touch of humor...mebe all three or everything for emo's inbetween...would'nt that be fun. It is a mini series ...enough for an afternoon and ...ehemm... evening :D
Kally thank~you for your wonderful contests and asking.I have your first three books and Message from Nam they are my ultimate gotos along with Merlot & plain hershey's bars ;)

ReplyDeleteFlags of our Fathers - it's about marines, brotherhood, war, and survivior's guilt
The Last Samari- a man torn apart by war redeems himself and finds out what is inside.
Tie me up! Tie me down! - finding love in a very strange way and it's kinda kinky!

Men Of Honor starring Cuba Gooding Jr, at the end he loses his leg, he plays a Navy Diver fighting to become a diver against the odds and predjudices.
ReplyDeleteMy dh gave me the movie, he was in the Navy, we just retired after 24 years and he was loaned to the Army and went to Iraq and brought all his guys home without injury. I read him your description and that movie was what popped out as soon as I finished.
I have Master at Arms in my library over at Smashwords but I haven't read it yet. My bad.

I think he would like the HBO miniseries called Generation Kill. It is a no-holds barred depiction of Marines. I enjoyed the miniseries myself.
ReplyDeletegeishasmom73 AT yahoo DOT com
Let's see... The Rock, because it's such a "guy" movie, plus it'd give him a chance to enjoy his surround sound with it :) Silly answer, I know :)
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a great Easter weekend, Kallypso!

"A Walk in the Clouds" (even though he would never admit it to the guys) b/c Danian has a romantic heart and it is about a returning war veteran who's life is in a different place then when he left. He might identify with Victoria's Mexican-American family. He also has such bad feelings about himself losing his foot and he might relate to the objections that her father has to Paul Sutton not being good enough for his daughter. I think that Damian secretly wants his own happy ending.
